Goodnight Mommy takes place in a lonesome house in the countryside in the heat of mid-summer. Nine-year-old twin Brothers (the Schwarz’s) await their mother’s return from the hospital. When she comes home with her face obscured by bandages, nothing is like before, and the children start to doubt whether this woman is actually who she says she is. What ensues is a terrifying struggle with fatal consequences. (Gary Reber)

Special features include a conversation with Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (HD 12:48) and upfront previews

The 2.38:1 1080p AVC picture is sharp, with excellent detail exhibited throughout, whether in the forestry farm area exteriors or within the home. Fine grain is barely evident. Contrast is excellent, with realistic black levels and revealing shadows. The color palette is rich and warm, with a wonderfully natural appearance. Hues are well balanced and realistic. Fleshtones are perfectly natural as well. This is a beautifully rendered film that exhibits excellent clarity and definition. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel German language soundtrack is quite nuanced with a mostly frontal focus, except very realistic deep bass thundering rainstorms, which sound realistically overhead. The rain is spread out throughout the soundfield when the perspective is from the outdoors, with subtle directionalized rain from the perspective of the home’s interior. This is an effective atmospheric soundstage. The music score is wide across the soundstage and spreads to the surrounds. Foley sound effects are perfectly realistic, which enhances the realism of the interior setting. Dialogue is in German with English subtitles at the bottom of the screen within the viewing window. Dialogue is clear and nicely integrated spatially. The soundtrack is generally reserved with moments of intensity and delivers a creepy nightmarish experience. (Gary Reber)
