Dear Gary:I am a new subscriber but wish I had done so months before. I have been a subscriber to Dale Cripps’ (WSR’s HDTV Editor) HDTV Magazine for a year. After purchasing a Mitsubishi WS55805 almost two years ago, along with the HDTV tuner, I have watched with awe and fascination the HDTV offerings from OTA stations. (There are ten DTV on the air in Los Angeles.) Living in an apartment, I could not get satellite or HDTV cable. I know a couple of other people who also purchased HD monitors but can only watch DVDs.Every few months, I would visit the retail outlets (Circuit City and GoodGuys) to see if they were presenting anything in real HD. It was most disappointing that none were showing actual OTA HD programming. Some sales people were not even aware that there was any. A couple of weeks ago, I visited Good Guys to replace a Pioneer DVD player and was amazed to find two D-VHS recorders on display and even actual recordings made from OTA stations. I was hooked. After finding out that the “promised upgrade” for my model would be available “later this year,” I decided to purchase a new Mitsubishi with the required IEEE 1394 interface. After getting the HDTV and JVC HM-DH30000 VCR, I immediately made some representative recordings of all the DTV stations. I was able to take the player to the office and actually demo real HDTV. (We have an HDTV monitor for video conferencing and marketing.) I also presented the D-Theater tape (Terminator 2: Judgment Day). The results were as expected. WOW TV! The largest problem now is that, although I can receive OTA perfectly, some others face the wrong direction and cannot pick up any signal. It seems that it will be up to cable to provide OTA signals to most people. I’m not sure that will be forthcoming soon.
