JVC HM-DH30000U Confusion

Dear Gary: I’m a little confused on the recording capability of the JVC D-VHS recorder/player. Player-wise: Can you record and play back on any VHS and S-VHS and S-VHS ET tape/recording?

Editor-In-Chief Gary Reber Comments:

I’m a bit confused with your question. But here's the story on compatibility. The HM-DH30000U will record and play back in VHS, S-VHS, and S-VHS ET. It can play back all recordings of the above made on a separate unit. D-VHS digital recordings can be played back on D-VHS units having the same playback modes. For example, a digital D-VHS recording in the STD mode can be played back on a another JVC or Mitsubishi unit having the same capability. D-Theater software, however, can only be played back on D-VHS units which are equipped with D-Theater playback capability, regardless of whether another unit has or doesn’t have the HS mode in which D-Theater recordings are made. If so, how does the quality compare to a high-quality consumer S-VHS/S-VHS ET/ VHS recorder/player? The HM-DH30000U is equipped with top notch picture improvement technologies such as DigiPure for image improvement in the S-VHS modes. To the best of my knowledge, recording and playback in the conventional analog S-VHS/ET modes should be on par, if not better than non-D-VHS analog S-VHS/ET models. Tape-wise: Can you only record digitally on D-VHS tape? No. It is also possible to record on S-VHS tape and, for that matter, possibly even on VHS tape if modifications are made. However, the quality attained will never be on par with that from D-VHS tape, and usage of lower grade tape may result in picture data info dropouts, and JVC does not guarantee the quality of the recordings made with such tapes. Usage of D-VHS tape is highly recommended to attain the quality of recordings guaranteed by JVC. This position may change (as has been the case with S-VHS ET) as time progresses and the quality of even “normal tapes” become higher at some point in the future. Tape-wise: If you can record other than digitally on D-VHS, can you play back that recording on other players (S-VHS/S-VHS ET/VHS)? Answered above in my first response.
