Sony VPL-HS10 Projector Review

Dear Gary: I wanted to pass on a thank you to Greg Rogers for his detailed and accurate review of Sony's VPL-HS10 projector. I was looking for a front projector but didn’t like any LCD models I had seen. However, on the strength of Greg’s review (and an online review which supported it), I bought the unit and am absolutely thrilled that I did. Its performance is astounding. I wanted to comment on some points on which Greg was uncertain. The IR signal easily bounces off the screen; the replacement bulb costs about $250; the bulb-saving mode works well and is quieter; my unit also had perfect detail (no bad pixels). There is no screendoor effect, and the projector works well during daytime without blackout curtains. The one drawback, as Greg pointed out, is a poorly designed remote control; Sony should rethink it and let owners buy a new one at cost. More generally, I had trouble finding a 25-foot DVI cable to use with the projector. A commercial A/V outfit in town ordered one for me (about $60) and it worked perfectly, but it should not have been so difficult! Finally, the biggest shock of having a High-Def system is discovering how poor DVDs are. Greg mentioned this but it still took me by surprise. I love your magazine. Is there any way you could get future release schedules for DVDs a bit further in advance?
