Progressive It Should Be—Amen!

Dear Gary: n your May 2003 issue, Joe Kane’s, “Analog Versus Digital Compression—Interlaced Video Needs to Go Away” was the best article in your magazine. In discussing and comparing interlaced and progressive, he states, “The visibility of line structure around moving objects is part of what is known as interlaced artifacts. They exist in any interlaced system including NTSC, PAL, and 1080i HDTV. The clear winner in picture quality is 720p over 1080i. The real vertical resolution of 1080i images in motion is somewhere around 640 lines.” All I have to say is amen and amen and amen! He has perfectly articulated the primary reasons why I have not jumped on the 1080i high-definition bandwagon. It’s interlaced, it sucks, and is far from the best that it can be. I have not, and will not purchase any high-definition interlaced video display. In addition, I have not, and will not support D-Theater™ D-VHS® until the movie studios release titles in progressive (at least 720p).

Contributing Editor Joe Kane Comments:

Soon after JVC has proven their capability of mastering D-Theater tapes from 1080p/24-frame sources, there will be a third version of Digital Video Essentials available in D-Theater. For now, the 720p and 1080i tapes are coming just as fast as the boat can bring them from Japan.
