NEC HT1000 Review

Dear Gary: Thanks greatly for the fine review of the NEC HT1000 by Bill Cushman in Issue 72, May 2003. I recently replaced an aging CRT projector with this new DLP projector and I couldn’t be happier. n regards to the factory color temperature setting of 6500K, I agree with Mr. Cushman that there seems to be a tad too much green. I do not own a color analyzer but I tried to come close to the factory 6500K without the excess green by adjusting the White Balance in one of the user settings. I came close but the colors just lacked the intensity of the factory setting. Since these are digital projectors, settings, if not the same, would be close. It would have been helpful if Mr. Cushman had published the RGB Brightness and Contrast numbers after he properly calibrated the review model to D65. But even without the proper D65 color temperature, this is by far the best-looking DLP projector I have even seen. I could swear I am watching film.

Contributing Editor Bill Cushman Comments:

Settings on various samples of the same projector may vary quite a bit due to component differences. These differences will be much smaller on DLP projectors as compared to LCD or LCoS, but variations in lamps and color wheel filters may cause significant differences. The settings I used may work well, or may not. You will have to judge the results visually. I used the YPbPr Component input and 480i for most viewing of DVDs. The custom color temperature settings were as follows: R Brightness = -2, G Brightness = 0, B Brightness = +2, R Contrast = 168, G Contrast = 116, and B Contrast = 128. Picture Contrast was set to 35, Brightness at 16, Color at 38, Hue at 35, and Sharpness set to 15. The custom color temperature was set up in User 1. I also found it necessary to adjust the color primaries and complements to achieve accurate color, especially in blue and yellow. The Color Compensation settings were as follows: R = 0, G = 0, B = 0, Y = -10, M = -12, C = -7, and Gain = 0. The respective factory settings were R = 0, G =0, B =6, Y = 7, M = -15, C = -2, and Gain =0. Let me know how these settings work for you. An excellent DVD with fabulous cinematography, beautiful color, and accurate skin tones is Charlotte Gray.
