Why Is “DVE” Only Available In The D-Theater Format And Not D-VHS?

Dear Gary: The inability to use the new DVE on a non-D-VHS D-Theater deck is a royal pain. My understanding of copy protection schemes is that the IEEE 1394 5C system works as well as D-Theater, so why isn’t this tape available in a format that ALL D-VHS decks can use? It seems crazy to me that a producer would want to limit the market for a product like this in this way, when there are alternatives to protect their work.

The D-VHS, let alone D-Theater market is currently so small and D-VHS tapes are so easy to duplicate that copy protection is critical to general distribution.
