Dear Gary:Could you please advise of the main differences between the PAL and NTSC versions of Digital Video Essentials on DVD? Is one better than the other? Are the test patterns different? For example, is the tint test pattern on NTSC version and not on PAL? Do they include a DTS-ES audio track as well as the Dolby Digital EX track? Is there future plans for a two- or three-disc set of DVE on DVD, which would include both versions (NTSC and PAL) with any extra tutorials and/or test patterns for more advanced users with experience using previous versions of Video Essentials? Tell Joe Kane to keep up his fantastic work. It encourages us all to make our home theatres “the best that it can be.”

Contributing Editor Joe Kane Comments:
It looks as if I’m going to have to start a Q&A for the DVD, not that I didn’t expect that.At Joe Kane Productions, we’ve designed DVE test patterns to be consistent in their look and operation in every format. For the most part, there are no differences in the overall look and use of the test patterns in any of the four formats (or future formats) we are providing. There are test pattern related things about PAL that are different from NTSC. As an example, there is no 2:3 motion in images in PAL so we aren’t testing for it.We’ll provide a complete list of the program contents in a future issue of Widescreen Review.
