Incredible Conference

Dear Gary: I attended the Home Theater Cruise™ November 1 to 8, and I have to say it is one of the best experiences I have had. The big boat, being at sea thing was great, but the conference was incredible. Thank you for assembling such a great bunch of panelists and topics to discuss. I don’t know if something like this would have been possible anywhere else. Can’t say I’ve seen anything like it before. I also want to thank you for constantly refocusing the panelist on the idea of an “Optimized” system. Inevitably, the panelist would stray and would talk about a typical home user system, which isn’t a bad thing, but I wanted to find out what was the ultimate possibility with today’s technology. This is how I always approach things so I know what tradeoffs I am making and if the tradeoffs are worth it. If I don’t know what is optimal picture or sound, then what is my reference point? I’ve been a subscriber of Widescreen Review for about six months now. In fact, that is how I found out about the Home Theater Cruise. Keep up the great work at your magazine. You and your team are doing some great things beyond just the typical component or DVD review. That is evident from the quality and issues discussed on the cruise. Overall, I am just plain excited to see the distance we have come in this audio/video world and the distance we still have to travel. Issues like Audio Calibration, HDTV Mainstreaming, Copy Protection, and getting the Big Boys to move forward are still hurdles facing this industry. Nonetheless, there are some great possibilities here. I hope to see you around in the years to come as things get even more exciting.

Editor-In-Chief Gary Reber Comments:

Michael, you made my day! You got it! Our purpose in putting our Technology Conference At Sea™ together was to focus on the issues impacting home theatre enthusiasts and to discuss optimized system approaches for the highest performance attainable for both the home theatre motion picture and surround music experience. The Technology Conference At Sea for the 2004 Home Theater Cruise will once again embrace this editorial approach with added topics, including Home Theater 101 for those just now engaging in putting a system together, and demonstrations conducted by the filmmakers and surround music artisans of their works. As the program develops we will post the topics and participants on www.hometheatercruise.com. I look forward to meeting you on the 2004 Home Theater Cruise, October 24 to 31 aboard Royal Caribbean’s Mariner Of The Seas to the Western Caribbean.
