Jim Carrey plays Carl Allen in a YEScapade about opening up to life's possibilities, especially when those possibilities include romance with an intriguing, free-spirited musician (Deschanel). Carl has stumbled across a way to shake free of post-divorce blues and a dead-end job: embrace life and say yes to everything. Accept call-now TV offers? Yes. Grab the first flight to anywhere? Yes. The 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 picture exhibits a wonderful, natural visual quality, with nicely saturated color and warm hues. Fleshtones are accurate throughout. Contrast is excellent, with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. Resolution is excellent, with fine facial features and textures that enhance the visual experience. The picture appears often impressively dimensional. The scene at the Hollywood Bowl is magnificent in dimensional quality, with dynamic contrast. This is a well-crafted picture that is sure to please, with its naturalness and excellent color fidelity. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby® TrueHD 5.1-channel soundtrack is conventional but nicely produced. Dialogue, while comprised of production sound and ADR, often integrates spatially well with the scenes. The music score is terrific, with a wide and deep soundstage, and provides an aggressive surround envelopment. Bass, at times, is deep, with .1 LFE extension to below 25 Hz. Atmospheric effects and Foley are well crafted and provide good directionality. This is an enjoyable, light soundtrack experience that nicely complements the storytelling. (Gary Reber)
