The Sessions is about love, sex, desire...and making every breath count. Paralyzed and confined to an iron lung since childhood, poet-journalist Mark O'Brien (Hawkes) has overcome adversity time and time again. But now, at age 38, he faces his biggest obstacle yet: losing his virginity. With the help of a beautiful therapist (Hunt), a sympathetic priest (Macy), and his own unbridled sense of optimism and humor, Mark embarks on an extraordinary personal journey to discover the wondrous pleasures that make life worth living. Based on Mark O'Brien's article On Seeing A Sex Surogate. (Gary Reber)

Special features include three deleted scenes (HD 03:34); four featurettes: Finds Inspiration (HD 04:01), Helen Hunt As The Sex Surrogate (HD 04:13), A Session With The Cast (HD 03:50), and The Women Who Loved Mark O'Brien (HD 04:24); the theatrical trailer; upfront previews; and an UltraViolet digital copy.

The 1.85:1 1080p AVC picture is gorgeously natural and sharp. Photographed with the Red One HD digital camera system, the extent of nuanced detail is impressive, especially during close-ups of facial features, hair, clothing, and object texture. The color palette is perfectly balanced and nicely saturated. Contrast is also well balanced with deep blacks and revealing shadow delineation. The imagery is consistently pristine with no artifacts to distract, nor objectionable grain. This is a really natural presentation that enhances the incredible realism. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is conventionally produced and quiet, as this is a strong dialogue-driven story. There are the occasional atmospherics, which manage to extend subtly to the surrounds as low-level ambiance. At times the music score permeates the soundfield. Dialogue is always intelligible but wanting in spatial integration. Overall, this is a serviceable but non-distinguishable soundtrack. (Gary Reber)
