WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
My Favorite Year is based on actual events: Earl Flynn on a live TV show in the mid-fifties. The basis for the Comedy Calvade show depicted in the movie is Your Show Of Shows and Joseph Bologna, who plays TV comedic Stan King, is doing Sid Caesar. The movie is a comic valentine to the unpredictable early days of live TV variety shows unknown in today’s world of video retakes and canned laughter. Peter O’Toole is Alan Swann, a declining, boozy matinee idol who is scheduled to make an appearance on (unbeknownst to him) live television. Junior scriptwriter Benjy Stone (Mark Line-Baker) is assigned the task of making sure Swann turns up camera-ready and sober which turns into some very hilarious misadventures.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85 matted images in this film have a television “set” look with colors under-saturated and a slight trace of grain and noise artifacts. Fleshtones are pale and unnatural, and some indoor scenes are overly bright.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is monaural and par for this period when most filmmakers did not use stereo. It is undistinguished, but the dialogue is very intelligible and well recorded.
