WSR Narrative Review |
|
Story Synopsis:
The Meteor Man portrays writer/director Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle, The Five Heartbeats) in the title role as The Meteor Man, a new super hero. The story is about a mild-mannered substitute teacher in an inner city school who finds himself endowed with superpowers when he is hit by fragments of a meteor. He uses this newfound power to rid his neighborhood of the Golden Lords, a violent gang that has theatened his family and friends. The effects by George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic are engaging. The action se-quences are entertaining as well as the overall comedic tone of the script. The story is underscored with a full orchestral soundtrack and punctuated with today’s hottest rap stars.
LaserDisc Picture:
The transfer, matted at 1.85:1, is excellent with solid and crisp color and consistent color balance, and natural fleshtone hues. Colors pop out and the overall appearance is “comic book.”
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The THX®-monitored soundtrack features almost continuous music with good surround envelopment. Stereo directionality is good, but the sound is excruciatingly bright.
