WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Polyester is a shameless attempt by crackpot writer/director to make bad taste respectable. It is a gimmick-ridden descent into suburban hell starring Tab Hunter and a 300 pound man in drag, Divine, who plays the wife of an X-Rated cinema owner. “Filmed In Odorama,®” every tortuous plot turn is peppered with bad puns, tasteless jokes, and a revolting smell. Criterion is bold enough to proclaim: “despite an array of special features, this disc stinks.” I’m not going to tell you which numbers on the working replica of the original Odorama card to beware of but there are a couple here which you better not scratch too hard!

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality has overall exaggerated colors and unnatural fleshtones. The digital transfer is matted to 1.85:1. It was made from a 35mm interpositive and the original three-track mono 35mm magnetic tracks. Nonetheless, the picture has an overall grainy appearance, but with solid and crisp colors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The monaural sound is compressed and low-fi.
