WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Man Bites Dog is a very black comedy and shocking brutal account of sexual torment and brutalized bodies. Rather than a film about violent excess, Andre Bonzel, one of the three first-time feature filmmakers, claims “it’s not a film about violence, it’s a film about filmmaking.” The film is shot with a hand-held camera and black-and-white stock and documents the exploits of a serial killer. The unusual style of the filmmaking involves the film crew’s presence as they ask questions, make comments, and respond to the killer. The interaction between the film-makers and their subject steadily increases such that the killer is soon directing the action and paying for film stock and the filmmakers are carrying bodies and helping hold down victims. The documentary style contributes to an overall sense of emptiness, sickishness, and depression.
