WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Francois Truffaut’s Mississippi Mermaid is a romantic tale of desire, money, murder and mystery. Catherine Deneuve plays a mail order bride of a successful yet lonely plantation owner played by Jean-Paul Belmondo. Mysteriously, she does not appear to be the bride he ordered. From the moment she steps ashore from La Siene du Mississippi, the mystery begins. Her appearance does not match the photo she had sent. Her likes and dislikes are not those described in her letters. Is she the woman he loved from afar? In the end he will kill to keep her in this compelling mystery-drama.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture on this disc is over matted. It appears to have been taken from a poor quality 35mm print and transferred at barely over 2.0:1 and then over matted to look 2.35:1, but in fact it measures 2.29:1. This can be detected by the positioning of the space around the credits and the composition in some scenes. The picture looks film-like but with inconsistencies in color fidelity and color balance. It is soft and inflicted with print artifacts and grain throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is mono and stringent.
