WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Bopha! in Zulu means “to arrest” or “to detain.” This bold story humanizes the horrors of South African apartheid, It is actor Morgan Freeman’s directorial debut. Set in 1980 in the fictional town of Moroka, law and order are maintained by South African Police Sergeant Mangena (Danny Glover), under the superiority of his white commander Lieutenant Van Tonder (Marius Weyers). A local murder instigates the government’s assumption that the community is unstable, bringing the arrival of a special branch tyrant (Malcolm McDowell) who maliciously turns the community upsidedown with conflict and brutality as he begins to detain children, torture prisoners, deny equal education in schools, and employ inhumane tactics. The abrupt chaotic violence captures Mangena in the middle, tragically stripping him of everything.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture suffers from excessive grain, oversaturated, inconsistent fleshtones and poor color fidelity.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby Surround® soundtrack is superb with aggressive surrounds and a haunting African-tinged musical score.
