WSR Narrative Review |
|
Story Synopsis:
From the novel by Virginia Woolf, Orlando (Swinton) is a young English nobleman with remarkably feminine features who delights in presenting himself as a female at his whim. He (as a male) embarks on an affair with the very masculine-appearing Queen Elizabeth I (Crisp) who advises him to never change. A bit hard to follow, but beautiful to watch with its production and costumes both nominated for Academy Awards®. Filmed in St. Petersburg, England and Uzbekhistan.
LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture is marred by a slight grain and poor detail throughout. Blacks are solid. Outdoor scenes look terrific but several scenes appear to be rendered with an orange tinted filter and look unnatural.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
A dynamic music score with excellent soundstage spatiality is the highlight of the soundtrack along with enveloping surrounds.
