WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
A fascinating and absorbing study of repressed love and blind devotion, with Hopkins and Thompson as British servants to Fox’ English baron in the 1930s. In addition to all the pantry intrigue and routines, Hopkins and Thompson harbor unrequited love for each other while their master, a foolish Lord, makes alliances with Nazi-sympathizers. Told in flashbacks from the 1950s.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been matted at 2.0:1. Color is vibrant but picture detail is poor and overall soft. Fleshtones are unnaturally reddish.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has a subtle surround ambience, a terrific music score, and an overall natural envelopment.
