WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Ballad Of Little Jo, the female western written and directed by Maggie Greenwald, tells the fictionalized story of a woman, Josephine Monaghan, who after an illegitimate pregnancy is cast out by her well-to-do Eastern family. Josephine, (Suzy Amis), travels west to Montana and finds that life for an unprotected woman in the mid 19th century frontier is full of danger. She disguises her gender as a young man so no one will bother her, rides out to an old mining camp, and there lives out the rest of her life as a man. In constant fear of discovery, she lives her life as a near hermit in the homestead she acquires, declining all offers of outside help and friendship, finding comfort only in the arms of Tinman Wong (David Chung). The movie has wonderful scenery and a realistic depiction of primitive life in the frontier.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been matted at 1.85:1. The cinematography has a soft haze with an “old times” visual style. Shadow detail is good in several candlelit scenes and the subdued colors render an overall natural look. The transfer is noise free with virtually no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The excellent soundtrack features a stunning frontier music score composed and performed by David Mansfield.
