WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Edward II is internationally acclaimed director Derek Jarman’s highly stylized and provocative film adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s mid-1590’s historical play about the British king’s (Steve Waddington) homosexuality and his passion for a boyhood friend/lover (Andrew Tiernan), causing his court to plot the exile and political assassination of the lovers. Both shrewd and bizzare, Edward II is an expressive tale in its exploration of homosexuality, desire, corruption, power and politics styled with a raw strange artistic flair. The film transcends modern as well as historical messages and features a musical appearance by Annie Lennox, an outstanding performance by Tilda Swinton (Orlando), and a riveting yet highly abstract plot that pendulates back and forth between past and present.
