WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Giusseppe Verdi’s La Traviata is an opera in three acts recorded at the Teatro alla Scala, Milano, Italy. The opera is based on Alexandre Dumas’ stageplay from his novel about the promiscuous Marie Duplessis, Le Dame aux camélias. The opera received its first performance at Venice’s Gran Teatro La Fenice on March 6, 1853 with the production in contemporary costume from the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV sited in Paris and its environs “around 1700.” Directed by Lilana Cavani, the Milan production reconstructs the psychological drama of life and death according to the myth’s preliminary history.

LaserDisc Picture:
The HDVS picture is framed at 1.78:1. While the picture is slightly dark in tone, it is sharply defined with natural fleshtones.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The music is wonderfully recorded with a superb concert hall ambience that surrounds and envelops. First rate performances and musicianship!
