WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Two English Girls (On The Continent), based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roché, is a passionate cinematic-literary achievement from famed French director François Truffaut. Set in the early part of the 20th century, Two English Girls tells a story of tragedy and drama revolving around a mismatched romantic trio. Beautifully captured with artistic cinematic expression, this film is alive with the complex, mature tradition and style of Truffaut.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been recomposed at 1.58:1 from its original European 1.75:1 composition. While the transfer is credited as originating from a 35mm interpositive, it appears undersaturated and washed out color in several scenes and exhibiting too much contrast and severe overbrightness in other scenes. Fleshtones are overall inconsistent and a slight grain further detracts.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The monaural soundtrack is undistinguished and sounds veiled and harsh, but the French dialogue is always clear.
