WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Lon Chaney, the man who brought to life the Phantom Of The Opera and the Hunchback Of Notre Dame is immortalized by James Cagney in the biography Man Of A Thousand Faces. Chaney began his career on the vaudeville circuit where he honed his incredible skill for make-up techniques. Some say his talent for communicating with his expressions was because his parents were deaf-mute. Chaney’s personal life was filled with despair after his marriage to Cleva (Dorothy Malone) who abandoned Lon and their son Creighton for a career of her own. The courts, citing an unstable home life, put the child in foster care. This motivated Chaney to aggressively seek work in films where his chameleon-like abilities made him an in-demand character actor.
