WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Western version of “The Seven Samurai,” here with a group of gunfighters hired to protect a poor Mexican village from marauding bandits. Great Elmer Bernstein musical score. Deluxe Letter-Box edition of the MGM/UA restored print of this classic, though disappointing in that it is not much of an improvement over the 1991 edition. Double feature on two discs with “Return of the Seven.”

LaserDisc Picture:
The image is framed at 2.40:1 and is a bit overmatted top and bottom. There is flicker, dirt and other distracting elements here and there, but overall scratches and other damage has been cleaned up. While the color is clearly improved, it appears to be washed out and bland. The original deep reds are simply deep pinks now. Flesh tones do not appear natural. Earth hues are subdued and the overall impression is of a soft, faded appearance and extremely monochromatic hued.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished, but the films are so “magnificent,” one almost forgives the defects.
