WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Mechanic is about a shrewd, seasoned professional assassin, code named, “The Mechanic.” Charles Bronson stars as Bishop, the underworld executioner who turns murder into an art form using guns, explosives, suffocation and poison where no job is too dangerous and every kill looks accidental. After he disposes of an associate, the dead man’s cold-blooded son, Steve (Jan-Michael Vincent) asks to be taught the tricks of the trade. The older Bishop decides to make Steve his young protegé, teaching him everything he knows, only to find, in the end, he is the assigned target of his student. A theatrical trailer is included with the title “Killer Of Killers (formerly The Mechanic),” which is suggestive of a tie to the post Death Wish series with Bronson portrayed as a man on a mission of justice against the mob.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 matted transfer is marred by artifacts and excessive grain throughout. Dull colors and dark hues, and rough blotched flesh tones give an old film appearance.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is another undistinguish-ed mono mix with generally compressed dy-namics which was the norm in the ’70s.
