WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Wide Sargasso Sea, based on the novel by Jean Rhys, takes place in the lush Blue Mountains of Jamaica during the mid Nineteenth Century and is fraught with island mystery and erotic obsession amidst a failing tropical plantation. Antoinette Cosway played by Karina Lombard is a sugar estate heiress who is promised by her parents to Edward Rochester, an Englishman with a pure bloodline. Antoinette falls madly in love, but Edward, though captivated by her untamed sensuality, is frightened by the world of black magic and hypnotic erotic obsession and seduction. The film was released with a NC-17 rating and presented here a “Unrated,” due to sexually explicit scenes.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality is marred by excessive video noise and grain throughout. The color fidelity, however, is excellent with vivid colors, solid blacks, and good shadow detail. The picture is not sharp and appears to have been filtered. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby Surround® soundtrack is excellent with an aggressive surround envelopment and an haunting Jamaican-tinged musical score. Every scene is enhanced by the effective use of surrounds.
