WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Cabin Boy is a wacky screwball comedy staring Chris Elliot as Nathanial Mayweather, an obnoxious, spoiled rich kid whose big dreams for a ritzy Hawaiian cruise fall short because he mistakenly boards a filthy fishing boat instead. Lost at sea with a boat full of zany old sailors, his wiseguy behavior antagonizes the scruffy crew who gladly take him on the wackiest misadventure filmable. The Tim Burton production features some hilariously inspired moments and a cameo by David Letterman who has featured Elliot’s off-the-wall sarcasm on Late Night With David Letterman.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality is marred by what appears to be an excessive use of filters that cast a reddish tint on fleshtones for a unnatural effect. Poor overall color fidelity exaggerates the phony looking sets which degrades the picture quality. While a slight grain can be detected, shadow detail is good and images are sharp. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is generally not enhanced by the effective use of surrounds, but rather the overall effect is monaural, except for a well recorded music score that is spatial. There is good dialogue intelligibility.
