In the Criterion tradition the three-sided CLV presentation includes an overview of Leigh’s career and two of his shorter works, an 18 minute film entitled The Short And The Curlies, and a 50 minute radio play entitled Too Much Of A Good Thing, both similar in artistic style.

WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Naked, winner of Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, features a brilliant performance by David Thewlis as a self destructive young drifter who chooses a low life on the run in the streets of nocturnal London, aimlessly confronted with the dark existential landscapes of a great city: violence, drugs, homelessness and desperate men and women. The dialog is improvisationally spoken throughout which renders a tone of immediacy and disgust guided by the vision of director Mike Leigh. A lot of critics loved this one for its artistic rendering and challenging vision of our time.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.75:1 picture is appears almost monochromatic with a subdued choice of hues which result in inconsistent and unnatural fleshtones. While contrast is generally good with blacks that are solid, the picture overall intentionally distorted to convey the grimy of the subject matter.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
A dynamic and spatial music score and clear dialogue highlight the soundtrack.
