WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Thumbelina is Hans Christian Andersen’s animated fantasy production telling the enchanted story of a real-life girl shrunk to a thumb size fairy princess and her romantic adventures. In the classic fairy tale tradition Thumbelina meets the Prince of her dreams who is just as tiny as she but before their romance can blossom, Thumbelina is kidnapped by a family of toads. Finding her way home becomes a magical fantasy ad-venture complete with a happy ending. Brilliant animation by Don Bluth combined and an award-winning musical score from Barry Manilow, make Thumbelina a family great.

LaserDisc Picture:
Computer technology combines with classic animation to create three-dimensional environments and liberate the camera to fly and circle through some of its frames. Don Bluth and his two partners, since their exodus from Walt Disney Pictures in 1979 have produced five other animated features. The picture quality is excellent but the color is not as vivid as the very best Disney animated features. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.
