WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Writer/director Bille August’s The House Of The Spirits is a compelling adaptation of Isabel Allende’s best-selling novel. This is an epic tale of romance and politics that spans three decades of the Trueba family. Jeremy Irons plays Esteban Trueba, a South American padrone who, married to clairvoyant Clara, (Meryl Streep), attempts to find happiness, but instead becomes jealously guarded and banishes his own sister (Glen Close) from their household. His unacceptance of change both in his own life and politically help to estrange his wife and daughter (Winona Ryder) and causes him to conspire to overthrow an elected government, an action he lives to regret.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.38:1 transfer exhibits wonderful composition and cinematography as well as a natural presence. Fleshtones are accurate and the color fidelity is excellent with good contrast, solid blacks and no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
A well recorded, but generally subdued soundtrack except for an occasional jolt. Dialogue is well recorded and there is a pleasing classical score.
