WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Hud is based upon a novel by Larry McMurtry (The Last Picture Show, Lonesome Dove, Texasville) about a man named Hud who is at odds with his father, tradition and himself. Hud, played by Paul Newman, has no interests except for fighting, drinking, hot-rodding his Cadillac and womanizing. Hud’s father, an old-line cattle rancher, is played by Melvyn Douglas and Patricia Neal plays the understanding and appealing housekeeper. Academy Awards® went to Patricia Neal, Melvyn Douglas and James Wong Howe’s brilliant and wonderful black and white cinematography.

LaserDisc Picture:
Shot in black and white Panavision® it is framed at 2.35:1. The picture is a bit soft overall, lacking in contrast and shadow detail, and images are wanting for sharpness. There is some grain and some minor artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has an unusual music score composed by Elmer Bernstein which features an acoustic guitar. Unfortunately the sound was recorded in plain uninteresting and undistinguished monaural Dialogue is always intelligible and background noise is minimal and unobtrusive.
