WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Paper is a comedy drama about a day in the chaotic life of a New York news tabloid, with its fast-paced deadlines, and cutthroat competition. It takes an inside look at editorial decisions on front page headlines in order to have the city buzzing. Henry Hackett, the workaholic city editor, played by Michael Keaton, spies some crucial information on a breaking story from the desk of the editor of the upscale newspaper, The New York Sentinel. The rest of the day is spent gathering evidence to expose a major scandal and proclaim the innocence of the two arrested youths on tomorrow’s headlines. The ambitious, tough-gal managing editor played by Glenn Close has already decided which headline will be on the cover and fights for control in a “stop the presses” battle with Hackett.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 matted picture transfer is excellent and delivers a solid artifact-free presentation that is sharp and detailed with deep blacks, good shadow detail and natural color.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound has its moments of surround grandeur with and without the presses.
