WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Runaway is writer/director Michael Crichton’s sci-fi story of robots-on-the-rampage. Machines that have been designed to do our work have been programmed to turn against us in this near future adventure. Tom Selleck plays a cop who specializes in tracking runaway’s (robots that have malfunctioned), when he discovers that they are being used as killing machines by an evil genius, played by Gene Simmons of KISS fame, who is determined to destroy all who stand in his way.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is presented in a 2.32:1 aspect ratio. The picture has a soft focus with fleshtones that are inconsistent and rendered with a reddish hue. Some scenes appear undersaturated and washed out. Shadow detail is poor and grain and noise are apparent in the dark scenes, as are various transfer and pressing artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby Surround® soundtrack is presented in the conventional movie format with essentially a monaural presence punctuated by the stereo music score and and the occasional directional sound effect. Nothing special here. Fidelity is veiled overall except for a dynamic, well recorded music score.
