WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based upon the novel by Thomas Harris, director Jonathan Demme has crafted a haunting psychological thriller that begins when FBI cadet Clarice Starling (Foster) is sent to interview imprisoned killer Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lechter (Hopkins). Lechter’s brilliant, sadistic mind is intrigued by the intelligent Starling, and he begins giving her mystifying clues about another crazed killer known as “Buffalo Bill.”

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is generally sharp and detailed with excellent shadow definition and good contrast. The picture is framed precisely at its intended theatrical aspect ratio, 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack was made from the 35mm Dolby Stereo® magnetic print master. There is a 20 to 25 Hz deep bass presence which is unnerving during the movie’s suspenseful moments. The dynamics are superb and there is a subtle but effective surround ambience which heightens the suspense.
