WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Fellini Satyricon is based on the Satyricon by Petronius. In Fellini’s imaginary Rome, the characters share a common rootlessness and lack of accepted moral values, a city without God where only Priappus and Mammon (gods of lust and money) are visible. The young heroes Encolpius, Ascyltus and Giton are in search of a more fulfilling, more beautiful and vital life and will risk life itself for a more radiant future. A similar view of the human-and Roman-condition was common to Federico Fellini’s Roma. Like all Fellini’s films his Satyricon is picturesque and fragmentary, representing a subliminal search by the protagonists for a life more fulfilling than the one lived now.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.35:1 picture has vivid color depicting glorious imagery. Fleshtones are natural, blacks are deep, and contrast is excellent. While grain, noise and artifacts are distractingly apparent throughout the eyes are treated to Fellini’s imaginative and magical imagery.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is presented in undistinguished monaural with harsh dialogue.
