WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Foreign Student, based on the novel by Philippe Labro, is a romantic drama about a young French student, Phillippe (Marco Hofschneider) who discovers treacherous love during his year spent abroad at Ashland Stuart University in Virginia in 1956. Set in the South with the brutal racial attitudes of the day, Phillippe discovers a disturbing and complex situation when he falls in love with April (Robin Givens) a beautiful young black teacher from across town. The fateful romance is beautifully photographed and features legendary blues from Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is presented at a matted 1.85:1 aspect ratio. It has a natural look with accurate fleshtones and excellent contrast. Sharp and detailed, the image has but a slight grain in the dark scenes, otherwise it is noise and artifact-free.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished al-though there are some great music moments. Overall surround ambience is wanting and the character is that of a movie without a real stereo surround presence.
