WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Renaissance Man is a delightful comedy with Danny DeVito playing the part of a “down on his luck” businessman who takes the only job offered at the unemployment agency— teaching a group of U.S. army boot camp illiterates who must pass an exam to graduate into the corps. Aware of the challenge, he feels he is inadequate for the part but plugs blindly on, hoping to break through their resistance. The dejected bunch of underachieving misfits, aware that this is their last chance from flunking out of basic training are looking for someone to believe in them, and they find the miracle on being introduced to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been matted at 1.85:1. Images are sharp and detailed but fleshtones are rendered less than accurate. Color fidelity otherwise is excellent with good contrast. The transfer suffers from no serious artifacts or noise to mar the presentation.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The surround soundtrack is wanting for music surround envelopment and dimensional integrity, particularly in the classroom scenes that sound confined and unreal.
