WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Swedish film The Slingshot was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in the 1993 Academy Awards® The story, is about the life affirming childhood adventures of inventor Roland Schutt, based on his biographical memoirs. Growing up in the 1920’s with his father, a Socialist, and his mother, a Russian Jew, Roland becomes a victim of prejudice and is bullied by his teachers and schoolmates. But the 10-year-old Roland is a survivor and a budding inventor, who uses his Mother’s contraband condoms (she sells them on the black market) to create a powerful slingshot, which he sells to the village children. His ingenuity, while bringing him fortune, also gets him in trouble with the police, but his will to survive is strong, and he does what he does best, he adapts.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.60:1 picture is a very natural looking period piece with accurate fleshtones, well defined blacks and good shadow detail. The near artifact-free picture is sure to please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Terrific music and excellent dialogue and effects combine with subtle surround.
