WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on “The Specialist” novels by John Shirley, Stone stars as May Munro (Stone), a beauty who wants deadly revenge for the murder of her parents by mobsters which she witnessed. She hires ex-CIA explosives expert Ray Quick (Stallone) to blow up the bad guys, while providing her with some very personal attention. Steiger and Roberts play the mob boss and his son, and Woods stars as a psycho with a grudge on Quick.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture adheres to the Academy standard 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The picture quality however, is perplexing. Side 1 is sharp and detailed with exemplary color fidelity and contrast, deep blacks, excellent shadow detail and solid noiseless night scenes. Side 2 is plagued with a sort of white haze throughout the interior scenes in particular which mars the otherwise excellent quality.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Specialist was released theatrically in both DTS Digital and Dolby SR•D. The soundtrack is wonderfully dynamic with bass extension to below 25 Hz in both screen and surround channels. Effective directional effects enhance the experience. The music score by John Barry is magnificent and well recorded.
