WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Terms Of Endearment, based on the novel by Larry McMurtry, tells the story of the special relationship of mother and daughter, through a life time of good times and tragedy. The movie won five 1983 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay. The mother, played by Shirley MacLaine, is so very protective of her daughter, played by Debra Winger, that she disapproves of her marriage and the life she lives with her teacher/husband (Jeff Daniels). We follow the drama in their lives through their daily phone calls, and watch the love life of the mother develop with her boozy, womanizing neighbor, a former astronaut, played by Jack Nicholson, while at the same time the daughter’s marriage and health collapse. An excellent cast and script make this an emotionally endearing but sad motion picture experience.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 matted picture is soft and filtered, but natural looking. Fleshtones are naturally rendered and overall the look is pleasing. Some artifacts are noticeable.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is mono with decent fidelitiy and dynamic bass extension.
