WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Robert Redford’s Quiz Show is based on the book Remembering America: A Voice From the Sixties by Richard N. Goodwin and exposes the game show scandal of the fifties which rocked the television industry and came to symbolize a loss of innocence in America. A contestant on NBC’s “Twenty One” Herb Stempel, (John Turturro) is the reigning champion until he flubs a question, with pressure from the show’s producers. The show’s new champion is Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes), a handsome cultivated intellectual who catches the public’s interest in ways that Stempel never did. But when Stempel blows the whistle, down comes Van Doren and the show’s producers.
LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture is a winner with excellent color resolution, accurate fleshtones, and sharpness, and no artifacts except for a slight detail overenhancement of some images.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The well recorded soundtrack is subtly enveloping with natural dialogue and ambience.
