WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The second film released by Twentieth Century Fox in its copyrighted CinemaScope® process,Otto Preminger’s classic western adventure River Of No Return was one of the biggest blockbusters of 1954. Robert Mitchum stars as the tough, good guy with a questionable past, who is trying to settle down with his 10-year-old son played by Tommy Rettig. Rory Calhoun is the spineless villain and Marilyn Monroe gives one of her best performances as the beautiful, hard-luck saloon singer. Partly filmed on location in the Canadian Rockies, the beautiful scenery adds much to this widescreen classic.

LaserDisc Picture:
The original CinemaScope 2.55:1 aspect ratio has been reframed to the current scope 2.35:1 ratio from a sharp DeLuxe print element for a tightly cropped image. Color fidelity is in-consistent but fleshtones are generally natural and colors vividly rendered. Discoloration is evident during scene transitions which is common to all IB Technicolor and there is a distracting blue-tinged edge discoloring visible virtually throughout along with slight artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is actually retains its directional dialogue and effects, but with marginal fidelity and compressed dynamics.
