WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
A family of three sons, headed by former cavalry officer William Ludlow (Hopkins), inhabits a ranch in the foothills of the Rockies—far from what the colonel sees as the madness of the times. Soon after Samuel (Thomas) brings home his charming fiancé Susannah (Ormond), he and his older brothers, Alfred (Quinn) and the unpredictable Tristan (Pitt), are torn apart in the horrors of World War I. Upon their return, Alfred and Tristan’s rivalry intensifies—a rivalry that will define the rest of their lives. The DVD picture is breathtaking, when viewed in the component anamorphic format.

LaserDisc Picture:
This exceptionally beautiful movie which won the 1994 Best Cinematography Academy Award® was produced as a tribute to the land and the people who settled it. The 1.82:1 picture is exemplary in naturalness. Fleshtones are natural in appearance, contrast is excellent as is color fidelity. Blacks are deep and solid with good shadow detail. The slightest noise and grain can be seen in the darker scenes, but it is never distracting, nor are their artifacts. The transfer was produced in the Sony High Definition format and while it shows an improvement in image quality in comparison to their first efforts, it still does not attain the quality level of the best non-HD and SuperScan® HD transfers. Nonetheless this is one beautifully photographed picture.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Originally produced in SDDS and Dolby SR•Digital the soundtrack is wonderful with an aggressive enveloping surround, directional effects and an extremely moving music score that beautifully complements the visuals.
