WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Murder In The First is an epic drama based on the true story about the exposure of the horrific conditions at the maximum-security prison Alcatraz brought to public attention in a trial of a prisoner who murders another prisoner. Kevin Bacon plays the murder-one prisoner who after a failed escape is thrown naked and alone into a damp, pitch-black cell in the bowels of Alcatraz for three years, periodically beaten by a vindictive warden (Gary Oldman). When he is returned to the prison population, in a physically and psychologically battered state, he murders the prisoner-escapee who turned informant. It’s an open-and-shut case of murder one but the public defender (Christian Slater) puts Alcatraz and its sadistic warden on trial, with the charge of transforming a once peaceful man into a brutal killer.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture has a natural soft period look that is slightly filtered, though fleshtones appear neutral. Blacks are deep and shadow detail is excellent with no artifacts or noise for a superb solid picture.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is exemplary in surround ambience and the resolution of subtleties.
