WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
My Summer Story, based upon the novels In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night Of Golden Memories And Other Disasters by humorist Jean Shepherd, is the delightful sequel to the whimsical A Christmas Story (reviewed in Issue 6). Re-leased theatrically under the title It Runs In The Family, this is a terrifically funny family film. Ralphie Parker (Kieran Culkin) finally finds the most perfect spinning top and competes with the neighborhood bully, while his father (Charles Grodin) engages in a war with the new neighbors when their antics and outhouse prove too much for him, and his Mom leads a revolt against the local dish promotion. And something special happens between his father and him when they go fishing for the most elusive, pollution-loving fish the “crappie,” and he is accepted as “one of the boys.”

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture is solid with no noise, grain or artifacts. Colors are vivid and richly hued with natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. Images are sharp and detailed, and the shadow detail is excellent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack’s music score provides subtle surround ambience with the occasional directional sound effect.
