WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based upon Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek: Generations is the seventh in the series. Retired Starfleet officer James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is found by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) seven decades later, after his supposed death. A mysterious energy ribbon, the Nexus, brings them together to rescue the Enterprise-D.

LaserDisc Picture:
Once again, the quality assurance THX® Laser Disc Program has produced a tour de force transfer of exceptional quality. The Panavision® scope picture has been transferred at 2.38:1. Detail and sharpness are exemplary, and the colors are rich and vibrant with fleshtones that are perfectly natural in their appearance. Blacks are wonderfully deep and solid, and shadow detail is superb. The picture is exceptionally pure, without noise, grain or artifacts. This is one picture that is absolutely incredible in every visual aspect.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Star Trek—Generations was released both in DTS® and Dolby Digital® and both the discrete and the Dolby Surround® matrix soundtracks are most impressive. The differences are surprisingly subtle with the Dolby ProLogic® decoding often conveying more ambience in the surrounds, except for several instances in which the discrete surrounds image better. “The Nexus (Family Reunion)” in Chapter 13 demonstrates the point with the discrete mix delineating the sounds of children in a circular pan around Captain Picard while the matrix version is narrowed essentially to the front stereo stage. As well, the discrete mix images better overall, for example, in the sounds of explosions and debris scattering out in all directions. But deep bass extension and dynamics, and dialogue clarity is equally well produced on both matrix and discrete mixes on this reference quality Dolby AC-3® release.
