WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the 1952 novel by Bernard Malamud, The Natural is an immensely satisfying, old-fashioned movie experience reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood. This is an allegorical fable in the guise of a baseball story and features an all-star cast headed by Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs, the most gifted ballplayer ever, but passed by due to fateful circumstance. When Hobbs gets his second chance, the childhood dreams of every viewer are rekindled with magic, wonder and awe. The movie was filmed in Buffalo, New York’s War Memorial Stadium. The Natural received four Academy Award® nominations in 1984 for Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Music (Randy Newman).

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture lacks overall detail and sharpness for a filtered, soft look but with varying scene quality due to noise in the darker scenes. Fleshtones are natural as is the picture’s entire visual rendering with colors that are vibrant. The picture is virtually absent of artifact distractions.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has natural dialogue but surround envelopment is limited to the music score.
