WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Nell is based on the play Idioglossia by Mark Handley about a child-woman raised in isolation in the backwoods of the Smoky Mountains with no contact with the rest of the world. Jody Foster was nominated, deservedly, for yet another Oscar® for her starring role in Nell. The story begins when her mother dies in a deep forest cabin and Nell’s existence becomes known to the “civilized world.” At first she is seen to be a wild-woman who speaks a strange, impenetrable language. But Nell is her own woman, a wise and pure soul unrestrained by the complications of today’s society. The story unfolds as her life is complicated by the attempts of a doctor and a psychologist to “take care of her” and acquaint her with contemporary society while protecting her from those who want to exploit or corrupt her innocence. Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson offer strong performances as the two doctors who observe Nell and help her to adjust.

LaserDisc Picture:
The THX-supervised Panavision® transfer is framed 2.32:1 and is extremely natural in appearance. The picture is sharp and detailed. Fleshtones are natural and contrast is superb with deep, solid blacks and excellent shadow detail. A slight veil of grain and noise permeates the darker scenes, but there are no distracting artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The matrix Dolby Surround® soundtrack features a wonderful music score by Mark Isham nicely recorded with excellent imaging and soundstage depth. Surround envelopment is limited to ambience effects and is subtle in nature. Overall the movie is wanting in surround presence to enrich the imagery and although some effects are directionalized and dialogue sounds natural, mostly this is a mono presentation.
