WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Roommates is the hilarious Odd Couple-like story about the gap between two generations and what happens when they are forced to live together. Peter Falk plays the “gruff-but-lovable” Rocky, an irascible old man evicted from his home and forced to move in with his grandson Michael (D.B. Sweeney), who he raised, in the younger man’s one-room apartment. Conflict between the two is the norm even when Michael brings home a new girlfriend played by Julianne Moore. Director Peter Yates makes a powerful statement about the value of family with this heartwarming film.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture exhibits awful color fidelity with oversaturated orange-hued fleshtones and poor shadow detail. Picture quality is problematically inconsistent throughout and further marred by noise, grain and artifacts. Somewhere in the process the quality suffered.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has a subtle surround presence aided by room tone and other sound effects that provide envelopment as well as a pleasant and well recorded music score. Dialogue is a mixture of manufactured ADR and natural room produced.
